Ian Ridpath
British astronomy writer and editor (Norton's Star Atlas, Oxford Dictionary of Astronomy). First journalist to investigate Rendlesham (BBC, 1983; The Guardian, 1985); his reconstruction — fireball + Orford Ness lighthouse + rabbit diggings + stars + background radiation — is the reference skeptical explanation, maintained and updated on his site to this day.
What is claimedProponents object that base veterans knew the lighthouse and that it does not explain every detail of every account.
Skeptical viewHe filmed the lighthouse from the same clearing for the BBC (1983): a flash every 5 seconds, the exact cadence on Halt's tape, at the exact bearing (110-120°). He also published the 1980-81 statements and the full tape transcript.
