Jim Penniston

USAF Staff Sergeant (81st SPS), leader of the first-night patrol at Rendlesham (Dec 26, 1980). His account grew in stages: his 1980-81 written statement puts him ~50 m from the light; since ~1996 he recounts touching a triangular craft with 'glyphs'; in 2010 (30th anniversary) he added a telepathically received 'binary code'; in 1994, under hypnosis, he said they were 'us, from the future.'

The time-traveler hypothesis, also known as chrononaut UFO, future humans, extratempestrial model and Terminator theory is the proposal that unidentified flying objects are humans traveling from the future using advanced technology. Some notable people have given recent public exposure to the hypothesis, such as retired NASA aerospace engineer Larry Lemke, Wisconsin congressman Mike Gallagher, and American filmmaker Steven Spielberg. The time-traveler hypothesis is considered extremely implausible by mainstream scholars and is generally regarded as unorthodox even among UFO theorists who argue that UFOs are extraterrestrial spacecraft or interdimensional phenomena.

What is claimedHe maintains he examined the craft for 45 minutes, touched it, and that the decoded binary yields a message ('exploration of humanity') and coordinates. Book 'The Rendlesham Enigma' (2019).

Skeptical viewHis own 1980-81 statement (and that of supervisor Chandler, listening by radio) put him at ~50 m; Burroughs, who was with him, denied in writing the notebook and the 45 minutes; Halt handled the notebook in 2003 and wrote 'no code or missing pages.' The decoded binary includes coordinates for Hy-Brasil, a phantom island, and is perfect modern ASCII (Kevin Boone analysis).
