Catalina Island (California, 1949-1955)

Four Air Force files on Santa Catalina Island, off Los Angeles, published as 'unresolved' in the seventh PURSUE release (Oct 2026): six objects seen by Avalon residents (Apr 28, 1949), told in a letter addressed to Kenneth Arnold —the pilot behind the 1947 'flying saucers'— that ended up in Air Force files, three Boy Scouts who saw a silver object 'faster than a conventional jet' with no sound (Jun 25, 1952), a technical sergeant who watched a round saucer 'the size of a pea' for ten minutes (1953) and an orange ball that fell in two seconds over Avalon (Mar 15, 1955).

What is claimedLocal press read the release as proof that Catalina was a UFO 'hot spot' for years.
Skeptical viewThe 'unresolved' label comes from the release index, not the files: the 1955 one concludes 'probable meteor', the 1953 one concludes 'Astronomical (Jupiter)' —with Griffith Observatory astronomers thinking they were 'possibly planets'—, the 1949 one says 'insufficient data for evaluation' and the 1952 informant warns that the observers' experience 'is probably meager' (it is the only one left unexplained).
