The Calvine photograph (Scotland, 1990)
On August 4, 1990, two young men reported a huge, grey, silent diamond-shaped object hovering ~10 minutes over the moors at Calvine (Perthshire), with a military jet nearby; they took 6 photos and called the Daily Record — which never published. A print reached RAF press officer Craig Lindsay, who kept it for 32 years; the negatives went to the Ministry of Defence and vanished. The photo was recovered and published in 2022 (David Clarke, Sheffield Hallam) and is often called 'the best UFO photo ever taken'. The full MoD file (DEFE 24/1940/1, 156 pages) sits complete in Nodriza's archive with our own OCR.
What is claimedThe academic photographic analysis (Andrew Robinson) concludes it is a GENUINE photograph of a scene before the camera, with no in-camera or post-production manipulation; if there was a hoax, it happened in the scene. The MoD's internal briefing (Sept 14, 1990, in our archive) identified the jet as a Harrier, reached 'no definite conclusion' on the object, and recorded NO Harriers on record operating in the area at the time. Nick Pope calls it 'the most spectacular UFO photo ever sent to the MoD'; in 1992 the U.S. was asked if it was their secret 'Aurora' aircraft (they denied it).
Skeptical viewDate, time and place rest on testimony alone (none can be derived from the print, and the exact location remains unconfirmed). Skeptical theories: a cardboard Christmas star hung from the branches on fishing line (Wim van Utrecht — who admits: 'educated guesses and intuition. No hard evidence') or a loch reflection with the photo inverted (Mick West; Robinson rates it 'unlikely and unproven'). The theories contradict each other (Clarke). The photographer ('Kevin Russell') has never been identified: 400+ contacted, the candidate tracked down in 2024 denied everything — the photo is in practice an orphan work (which is why Nodriza only links it, never hosts it).
