"Enterprise " mean s the e n tity (e . g ., a manufacturer or vendor) responsible for assigning unique
item identifi ers to items .
"Automatic identification device " means a dev i ce , such as a reader or interrogator , used to retrieve
data encoded on machi ne -readable media .
"Concatenated un i que i tem i d e ntifi er " means--
(2 ) For items t hat are serialized withi n t he original part , lot , or batch n umber , the l inking
together of the un i que identifi er da t a elements i n order of t he is su i ng agency code ; enterpr i se
identifier ; original part , lot , or batch number ; and serial n umber within the original part , l ot , or
batch number.

"Data qual ifi er " mean s a speci fied c haracter (or string of characters ) that i mmediately precedes a
data field that defines t he general category or intended use of the data that fol l ows .
"DoD r ecogni zed unique i d enti f ication equi v alent " me ans a un i que i d ent i f i c a t i on method t hat
is in commercial use and has been recognized by DoD . All DoD recognized unique identification
e q u i v a l e nt s a r e l isted at h t tp : // www . acq . o sd . mil/dpa p/pdi /uid/ i ui d_ e q uiva l ent s . html .
"DoD unique item identification " means a system of marking items delivered to DoD with unique
item i dent i fie r s t hat have ma c h ine- r eada b l e d ata e l ement s t o dist i ngui s h an i tem f r om a l l other
like and unlike items . For items that are serialized within the enterprise ident i fier , the unique
item i dent i fie r s hal l incl u d e t h e d a ta elemen ts of the e n terp r ise ident ifi er , and a unique ser ial
nu mber . For items that are serialized wit h in the part , lot , or batch number within the enterprise
identifier , t he unique item identifier shall include the data elements of the enterprise identifier ,
t he ori ginal part , lot , or batch n umber , and the serial number .
"Enterprise identifier " means a code that is uniquely assigned to an enterprise by an issuing
a gency .
"Government's unit acquisition cost " means--
(1 ) For fixed- price type line , subline , or exhib it line items , the unit price i de n tified in t he
contract at the time of de l ivery ;
(2 ) For cost - type or u ndefinitized line , subline , or e xhibit line items , the Contractor ' s
estimated ful l y b u rdened unit cost to the Government for each item at the time of del i very ; and
(3) For items produced under a time-and-materials contract , the Contractor's estimated fully
b urde ned un i t cost t o the Gove r nment at the t i me of delivery .
"Machine-readable " means an automatic identification tec h nology media , such as bar codes , contact
memo r y buttons , r adio fre q uency i d ent i f ication , or opt i c a l memo r y c a rds .
" Issuing agency " means an organization responsible for assigning a non-repeatable identifier to
an e nterpri s e (i . e ., Du n & Br adst reet 's Data Univers al Nu mbe r ing Sys tem (DUNS) Nu mber , GSl Compa ny
Prefix , or Defense Logistics Information System (OLIS) Commercial and Government Entity (CAGE)
Code) .
" Issuing agency code " means a code that designates the registration (or controll i ng ) authority for
t he e n terprise identifi er .
" Item" means a single hardware articl e or a s i ngle u ni t formed by a g rouping of subassemblies ,
components , or constituent parts .
"Lot o r batch nu mber" mean s an i d ent ifying n umber ass i gned by the enterpri se to a des i gnated group
of items , usually referred to as either a lot or a batch , all of which were manufactured under
identical condition s .
"Original part number " means a combination of numbers or letters assigned by the enterprise at item
creation to a class of items wit h the same form , fit , fu nction , a nd interface .
"Parent item" means the item assembly , intermediate component , or subassembly that has an embedded
item with a unique item identifier or DoD recognized unique identification i equival ent .
" Seri al number wi thi n the enter pri se i de ntif i er " or " unique ser ial n u mber " means a combinat i on
of numbers , letters , or symbols assigned by the enterprise to an item that provides for the
d i ff e ren tia t ion of tha t i tem f r om a ny o the r l i k e a nd u nl i ke i tem a n d i s neve r use d aga i n withi n the
enterprise .
" Seria l n u mber wi thi n t h e pa rt , l o t , o r b atc h numbe r " me a n s a c ombinat ion of number s o r lette r s
assigned by the enterprise to an item that provides for the differentiation of that item from any
othe r like i tem wi thi n a part , lot , or batch number as s i g nment .
" Serialization withi n the enterprise identifier " means each item produced is ass i gned a serial
n umber t hat is un i que among a ll t he tangibl e i tems produced by the enter pri se and i s never used
again . The enterprise i s responsib l e for ensuri ng u nique serial ization within the enterpri se
identifier .
" Serialization within the p art , l ot , or batch number " mea ns each i tem of a particular part , l ot , or
batch number is assigned a unique serial number within that part , lot , or batch number assignment .
The e n terprise is resp onsible for ensu ri ng u n i q ue serialization within t he part , l ot , or batch
number within the enterprise identifier .
" Uniq ue item iden tifier " mean s a set of data element s marked on items that is globally u n ique and
unambiguo us . The term includes a concatenated unique item identifier of a DoD recognized unique
identification equivalent .
" Unique i tem i de n tifi er type " means a des i gnator to i ndicate which method of unique l y ident i fyi ng
a part has been used . The current list of accepted unique item identifier types is maintained at

(c ) Unique item identifier .

(1 ) The Contractor shall provide a unique item identifier for the following :
( i ) Al l delivered items f o r whi ch t h e Gove r nme n t 's u n i t acquis i tion cost is $ 5 , 000 o r mo r e .
(ii ) The following items for which t he Government's unit acquisition cost is less t han $5 , 000 :
